Food and Drink #3

Bollito Misto (mixed boiled meats), Bologna
(yes, that's tongue and stuffed trotter)

Butcher shop, Bologna
(yes, those are skinned coneys)

Eggplant parmigiana and green sauce, Bologna

The best pasta we ate in Italy, Bologna

Artichokes, Bologna

Market graffiti, Bologna

Preserved peel, Bologna

Superior spring onions, Bologna

Cabbages and roses, Bologna

Preserved meats, Bologna

Autumn produce, Bologna

Fried fish with potatoes and spinach, Zadar (very delicious)

Grilled sardines, Dubrovnik

Mussels at Wanda, one of Dubrovnik's fanciest restaurants

...and mushroom soup (the picture cannot do justice to this soup's musty unctuousness)...

...and fettuccine vongole....

...and the chef's salad.

Bosnian roasted veges, Dubrovnik

Humble but delicious sandwiches, and a whole salted sardine, Dubrovnik

Pizza, Napoli

Calzone, Napoli. It seemed an unfair challenge to our abilities to make a pizza with lots of filling, fold it over, then put more topping on. This calzone and its friend the pizza above, defeated us.

We were also served this very nice spinach... which we had ordered under the name of broccoli. This happened two nights in a row in two restaurants... any clues, anyone?

Street food, Naples

Fish shop in Naples

Trussed octopuses, Naples

The Veuve, in the Palace

  1. Re broccoli and spinach-- I can't shed any light on this, but I do know a bloke who knows a bloke who has a little elixir that can make them both taste like strawberry icecream... or zabaglione...
